City Council supports state climate change and housing legislation

City Council · Meeting of April 22, 2026

Easthampton backs three state bills on climate, housing, data centers. The City Council voted unanimously to support the Climate Change Superfund Act (H.1014/S.588), the "Yes in My Backyard" housing bill (H.1572/S.2836), and a data center construction ban. The council also approved $2.1 million in supplemental appropriations for police accreditation, water infrastructure improvements, and municipal stabilization funds.

A $150,000 Valley CDC down payment assistance grant drew opposition from Councilors Smith and Kwiecinski, with Councilor Newton abstaining. City Council President Denham cited the July 2023 flooding that caused $650,000 in farmland losses as the driving force for climate action.
