Finance Committee backs health care fund, $20,000 legal services appropriation

City Council - Finance Committee · Meeting of February 25, 2026

Easthampton Finance Committee unanimously backs health care stabilization fund and legal services appropriation. The three-member committee, chaired by Tom Peake with members Koni Denham and Jonathan Schmidt, voted 3-0 to recommend creation of a dedicated Health Care Costs Stabilization Fund to address a roughly $1 million deficit in health insurance costs this fiscal year and a 13 percent increase anticipated for the coming year. Mayor Salem Derby told the committee the fund would be drawn from free cash and remaining surpluses in Health, Dental, and Life Insurance budget lines.

The committee also voted unanimously to recommend a $20,000 supplemental appropriation to City Attorney Professional Services, representing the second such appropriation request for that line in the fiscal year.
