Rent Study Committee charts course on rental housing options
Rent Study Committee · Meeting of January 6, 2026
Easthampton Rent Study Committee approved prior minutes and assigned research assignments across housing models nationwide. Chair Kiam Jamrog-McQuaid clarified that the committee is exploring policy parameters for a home rule petition rather than predetermining whether rent control will be proposed; members will investigate case studies from Cambridge, St. Paul, Portland, California, and Oregon, among others.
David Boyle advocated for Easthampton-specific approaches including potential six-month rent caps for out-of-state buyers. Janna Tetreault flagged the town's zoning update as an opportunity to address housing supply. The committee plans listening sessions and will update the City Council in February, with recruitment of renters underway.
