Council on Aging weighs $40,000 budget cut scenario for FY2027.
Council on Aging · Meeting of May 19, 2026
EASTHAMPTON — The Easthampton Council on Aging voted unanimously to formally oppose Mayor Derby's proposed $40,458.73 budget cut for FY2027. Vice-Chair Thomas Brown moved the opposition, arguing that the reduction represents less than one percent of the town's $65 million municipal budget but would disproportionately harm vulnerable older adults. If the override fails, the cut would force closure of the center one day per week (proposed as Friday), reduce four full-time staff by two hours weekly, and eliminate or relocate 26 percent of Friday transportation rides, strength and balance classes, and grab-and-go meal programs.
Chair Cathie Schweitzer will draft a letter to the mayor signed by all board members expressing the position.
