Council on Aging reviews mayor's senior center proposal, coordination with Easthampton Neighbors
Council on Aging · Meeting of March 17, 2026
EASTHAMPTON — Council on Aging considers mayor's combined facility proposal. Chair Cathie Schweitzer led discussion of Mayor Salem Derby's draft feasibility study for a 42,000- to 48,000-square-foot Senior Center and Recreation Complex at 226 Park Street, with estimated costs of $22 million to $34 million and a recommended bond of $27 million to $30 million. Board members raised detailed questions about space specifications, staff allocation, and design assumptions, noting the proposed 4 square feet per person exceeds the current 2.1 square foot standard.
Separately, Mary McCarthy of Easthampton Neighbors proposed coordination on transportation and member recruitment, with Ferraro suggesting quarterly social events at the senior center to expand both organizations' reach.
