Commission Endorses Naming Pool For George Malaga

Parks & Rec Commission · Meeting of October 14, 2026

EASTHAMPTON — The Easthampton Parks and Recreation Commission voted to endorse naming the city pool for longtime foreman George C. Malaga, as Director John Mason announced his resignation after 17 years. Mason, who leaves November 6 to become town administrator in Lanesboro starting November 9, read a letter crediting Malaga with keeping the pool, which opened in 1960, running for "more than half of its existence." Members Carolyn, Michelle, Eric and Brian voted yes on the naming endorsement, which now heads to the City Council. Mason also reported the city is rejecting contractor work on the Nashawannuck Pond restoration project, saying "I will not sign off on anything that doesn't bring it to the way it was designed." A proposal from the Western Massachusetts NEMBA mountain bike group to build a new trail bridge and boardwalk was held over to the November 18 meeting pending site review.
